Psalms 86:13Sefaria

True gratitude to God touches every part of human existence, recognizing a profound rescue of both the physical body and the spiritual soul. The primary approach among commentators is that this gratitude reflects two distinct layers of divine kindness. First, God extends His goodness to the physical body. Even though the physical self may not inherently deserve such grace, God steps in to save a person from earthly enemies and physical dangers [אלשיך, מלבי״ם]. Second, God rescues the spiritual soul. By its very nature, the soul has no desire to sin, yet it constantly faces the pull of negative forces that try to drag it down into wrongdoing. God's kindness protects the soul from these destructive urges [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

Being saved from the lowest depths highlights a state of extreme lowliness and despair Any grave or pit is naturally deep, but describing it as the absolute bottom intensifies the sheer distress and hardship from which a person is pulled [רד״ק]. Commentators offer several complementary ways to understand this profound darkness. On a physical and historical level, it refers to the past, specifically when God saved King David from death. This was most notable when God rescued him from King Saul, who actively sought to take his life [רד״ק].

On a spiritual level, the deep pit represents the severe judgment of hell This carries a deeply personal meaning in King David's life, pointing directly to his sin with Bathsheba. Those who commit adultery are traditionally bound for the deepest spiritual punishments. David expresses profound thanks because God forgave his wrongdoing and removed his sin, just as the prophet Nathan announced to him. Through this forgiveness, God spared his soul from a devastating fate

Beyond giving thanks for past rescues, this divine deliverance also points toward the future [רד״ק]. God's enduring kindness will continue to lift the soul out of lowliness, guiding it upward toward a proper, meaningful life for anyone wise enough to hold tightly to His ways [מאירי].
