תהלים, פרק פ״ו, פסוק ח׳

Psalms 86:8Sefaria

אֵין־כָּמ֖וֹךָ בָאֱלֹהִ֥ים ׀ אֲדֹנָ֗י וְאֵ֣ין כְּֽמַעֲשֶֽׂיךָ׃

Throughout the universe, various forces and powers operate, yet God maintains absolute supremacy over them all. His exclusive rule extends across every aspect of creation, defining both His very essence and His infinite ability to act.

When considering the nature of these other powers, commentators offer different perspectives. Some identify them as the angels and heavenly ministers [מצודת דוד]. However, these beings are merely messengers who possess no independent power, acting strictly according to God's commands [רד״ק]. Another perspective suggests these forces are the sun, the moon, and the heavenly hosts, which other nations mistakenly worship. While these elements clearly affect the earth, they function solely as intermediaries channeling God's power [מאירי]. Alternatively, these powers can be understood as human judges and leaders. In this view, God stands as the supreme authority from whom all earthly leaders draw their strength [מלבי״ם].

The declaration that nothing compares to God serves to completely reject idolatrous beliefs. Such false philosophies claim that while God created the world, He abandoned its daily governance to other entities like stars and constellations [מלבי״ם]. A stark separation exists between God and these lesser forces, emphasizing His immense honor and ultimate superiority [מנחת שי]. Furthermore, God's uniqueness is profoundly evident in His closeness to humanity. Unlike distant stars or rigid authorities, He stands entirely alone in His readiness to listen to those who pray to Him [מאירי]. The specific title of Lordship used to address God teaches that this aspect of His presence is great and worthy of being sought in prayer, assuring that He will listen just as attentively as He would to His explicit name [אלשיך].

Beyond His essence, there is no wondrous act in the world that can compare to God's actions [מצודת דוד]. While angels and heavenly bodies are locked into their assigned roles and can only act upon command, God exercises unrestricted control over creation. He can change the laws of nature and alter the influence of the constellations whenever He desires [מאירי, רד״ק]. This unique way of operating is also reflected in the order of His work, as He gives precedence to the upper spiritual worlds before the lower physical ones [רש״י]. Ultimately, recognizing the unmatched nature of God's deeds uproots any belief in multiple creators or independent causes, firmly establishing Him as the sole Creator and the active, guiding force of the entire universe [מלבי״ם].
