תהלים, פרק צ״ה, פסוק א׳

Psalms 95:1Sefaria

לְ֭כוּ נְרַנְּנָ֣ה לַיהֹוָ֑ה נָ֝רִ֗יעָה לְצ֣וּר יִשְׁעֵֽנוּ׃

A passionate invitation echoes out, urging the people to serve God with joy and to recognize His guiding hand. The initial plea to come forward is not an instruction to physically travel. Instead, it acts as a strong encouragement, spurring the listeners into action [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מאירי]. Alternatively, it is a direct request for the people of Israel to gather closely around the singer [אבן עזרא].

The primary approach among commentators is that this joyous urging points toward the days of the Messiah and the final redemption, a time when the Israelites will encourage one another to thank God for saving them [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. In contrast, others view this as an immediate, educational message. Rather than looking to the distant future, the leader addresses his own generation, guiding them away from false beliefs and teaching them to recognize God's providence and serve Him happily [מאירי]. A unique perspective attributes these words to Moses, speaking directly to the generation that wandered the desert and never entered the promised land. He comforts them with the promise that they will one day rise and sing joyfully alongside him [אלשיך].

The celebration unfolds in two distinct stages, reflecting two different ways God interacts with the world [מלבי״ם]. The first stage involves singing to God [ביאור שטיינזלץ] in His role as the Creator of the universe. This reflects His general providence, a broad care recognized by all of humanity [מלבי״ם]. The celebration then intensifies into a loud shout of immense joy [מצודת ציון, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ] directed at God as a strong savior [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This second stage represents His specific, personal care for Israel. It is a powerful shout of happiness, much like the great noise that erupts when a king enters the camp of his people [מלבי״ם]. At the same time, addressing God as a strong rock of salvation hints at His attributes of strict justice and power, reminding the people that alongside their joy, they must also stand before Him with deep awe [אלשיך].
