Ruth 1:18Sefaria

The dialogue between Naomi and Ruth reaches a decisive turning point that reveals the sheer magnitude of Ruth's devotion. After trying every possible argument to convince her daughter-in-law to return to her homeland, Naomi finally recognizes that Ruth's choice is absolute. Ruth displays a resolve that goes beyond ordinary willpower; it is a profound internal strengthening, a persistent power, and a deeply fortified heart [מלבי״ם]. Her reaction actually defies human nature. Usually, facing a constant stream of arguments against one's beliefs will weaken a person's resolve, but Ruth only grew stronger with every attempt Naomi made to dissuade her Ruth proved her determination not just in speech but in action, physically preparing for the journey while presenting wiser and more powerful arguments than Naomi had anticipated

Beyond her basic decision to embrace a new faith, Ruth made a deliberate effort to make the journey specifically alongside Naomi. She understood the harsh reality of entering a foreign land alone. By arriving in Bethlehem in the company of Naomi, who was well-known in the area, Ruth ensured she would have a layer of protection and the support of extended family [אגרת שמואל].

This interaction serves as the cornerstone for the Jewish approach to accepting converts. The primary approach among commentators is that a prospective convert is initially presented with the hardships of Jewish life and the consequences of failing to uphold the commandments, in order to test their sincerity. However, the moment their wholehearted devotion is clear, it is forbidden to continue discouraging them or making the process overly difficult. Recognizing Ruth's unwavering commitment, Naomi simply stopped trying to turn her away Furthermore, while it is standard practice to eventually draw a sincere convert close and speak of the rewards of the commandments, Ruth had fortified herself so completely that Naomi realized even these words of encouragement were unnecessary [אגרת שמואל].

A contrasting perspective shifts the focus of this profound strengthening from Ruth to Naomi herself. In this view, Naomi drew immense courage and strength from the fact that Ruth was walking by her side. Looking back on her tragic past, Naomi realized that her own survival after the loss of her husband and sons served a single divine purpose, which was to bring Ruth into the nation of Israel. Recognizing that this entire sequence of events was orchestrated by God, Naomi finally ceased her attempts to hold Ruth back
