A society consumed by deep moral corruption and the ruthless exploitation of the weak ultimately engineers its own downfall. In Samaria, the ethical collapse reached a point where the very concept of fairness was entirely forgotten. The people lost their moral compass completely, abandoning any sense of what is right and just.
The primary approach among commentators is that the society forgot how to walk on a straight and honest path. These were not individuals struggling with a mix of good and bad choices. Instead, they suffered a total ethical failure, completely forgetting how to act honestly and becoming incapable of performing even a single proper deed [רד״ק]. This profound inability to do right reflects a deep breakdown in their relationship with God, which naturally led to severe crimes against their fellow human beings [מלבי״ם].
Instead of basic decency, the society became defined by violence and theft. Wealth and property were aggressively seized through force and extortion, then gathered and hidden away. The severity of their actions is magnified because these crimes were not driven by desperation, hunger, or a basic need to survive. They stole without any necessity, driven purely by the desire to hoard endless amounts of wealth within their grand palaces [מצודת דוד].
This reality created a tragic historical and moral reversal. The Israelites, who were explicitly warned upon leaving Egypt not to adopt the corrupt practices of the surrounding nations, sank to a low that shocked those very neighbors. Consequently, God Himself summons these foreign nations to invade Samaria and deliver punishment [מלבי״ם]. Because the people's path became so thoroughly twisted, God will certainly not intervene to help them [מצודת דוד]. In an outcome of exact justice, their punishment will perfectly mirror their crimes. All the treasures they violently extracted and hoarded in their palaces will ultimately become plunder and loot in the hands of their enemies [רד״ק].
