A simple error made by an ordinary person usually affects only their immediate surroundings. However, when a person in authority speaks or acts in error, the impact echoes far and wide, taking on a power of its own and completely altering reality. On a practical and political level, a leader's mistake leads to severe injustice and causes much heavier, widespread damage than the misstep of a commoner [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
Beyond genuine errors, the heavy constraints of governing sometimes force a ruler to make decisions that go against absolute truth and proper justice. To the general public, these actions appear to be blunders born of ignorance. In reality, they are deliberate choices dictated by the harsh necessities of leadership [מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא].
On a spiritual level, the concept of a ruler can refer to God or to the spiritual leaders of a nation. When a decree or statement is issued by such an authority, even if it is spoken completely by accident and without any harmful intent, it becomes an established reality that cannot be reversed. It carries the absolute weight of a royal command [רש״י, צאינה וראינה]. History shows the destructive power of a leader's casual or mistaken words. For example, Jacob unknowingly cursed whoever had taken Laban's idols, a statement that ultimately caused his wife Rachel to die prematurely on the road. Similarly, a remark made by Eli the High Priest to Samuel the Prophet eventually resulted in Samuel's sons losing their rightful place in leadership [תורה תמימה].
From a philosophical perspective, these ideas address the painful reality of injustice in the world, such as good people who suffer. Some individuals look at this suffering and view it as a mistake of Divine Providence. They mistakenly believe that God has handed the management of the world over to the fixed laws of nature and the stars, completely removing His personal supervision. Yet, another perspective suggests that this is simply the complex design of the world. Just as a human king does not rewrite a broad, national law to accommodate a single citizen, God does not always alter the established laws of nature and destiny merely to spare an individual from their personal fate [תעלומות חכמה].
