The arrangement of the inner sacred vessels reaches its ultimate peak with the final positioning of the solid gold cover upon the Ark [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The instruction emphasizes the actual action of setting this cover down within the most sacred space of the Tabernacle. The focus is not simply on where the Ark sits, but on the deliberate act of establishing the cover firmly inside the Holy of Holies [קאסוטו].

There is an interesting sequence in the instructions for setting up this space. The command to hang the dividing curtain is given before the instruction to place the golden cover on the Ark. This order conveys a deep conceptual truth: the separation created by the curtain is an absolute prerequisite for the cover and its profound meaning. Yet, when the Tabernacle was actually assembled later on, the practical steps were reversed. The Ark, already covered, was brought inside first, and only then was the dividing curtain hung [רש ר הירש].

This sequence raises an additional question, as an earlier instruction already dictated placing the cover on the Ark. To resolve this repetition and the shifting order of events, commentators identify two distinct stages in positioning the golden cover. Initially, before the Ark was brought into the Holy of Holies, Moses placed the cover on it in a loose and temporary manner. This allowed the two pieces to be transported inside as a single unit, ensuring the cover was resting properly on top rather than being carried alongside it. However, at this preliminary stage, the Ark had not yet fulfilled its ultimate purpose. Once inside the sacred space, Moses adjusted the cover, setting it in its exact and perfect position. This precise, final placement is the true focus of this stage in the setup. Only through this final adjustment did the Ark achieve its complete spiritual status, becoming fully recognized as the Ark of the Testimony [העמק דבר].
