Exodus 26:36Sefaria

The eastern entrance to the Tabernacle was not meant to remain open and exposed to the outside world. To secure this sacred space, a large curtain was placed at the doorway to serve as both a partition and a gateway While a distinct type of veil was reserved exclusively for dividing the Holy from the Holy of Holies, the screen at the front functioned as a general entrance cover [מלבי״ם, קאסוטו]. Its very nature and design served the purpose of shielding and protecting the holy area within This protective screen measured exactly ten by ten cubits, perfectly matching the dimensions of the inner veil It was spun from twenty-four individual threads, combining four distinct materials with six threads of each: wool dyed blue, purple, and scarlet, alongside fine white linen

The creation of this curtain was entrusted to a dedicated artisan whose specific professional title was that of an embroiderer Embroidery was considered a simpler, less complex skill compared to the advanced weaving used for the inner veil and the main covers of the Tabernacle This difference in craftsmanship led to two main distinctions in the final product. First, unlike the inner veil which featured intricate images of winged figures, the entrance screen lacked these designs entirely Second, the way the pattern appeared on the fabric was different. The primary approach among commentators is that this needlework created an identical pattern visible on both sides of the cloth However, another perspective suggests that the embroidered design was raised and visible only on the side facing the interior of the tent, leaving the exterior side completely plain

These differences in complexity and decoration directly reflect the curtain's physical location. Positioned at the entrance, it occupied a transitional space between the ordinary outside world and the deeply sacred interior. Because it stood further away from the Holy of Holies, it required a slightly lesser degree of artistic detail. This physical and spiritual hierarchy was also evident in the foundation supporting the curtain. While the pillars and their hooks were overlaid with gold to honor the space, the bases anchoring the entrance were cast from copper, a material perfectly suited for this intermediate, transitional zone [אבן עזרא].
