Exodus 26:3Sefaria

Constructing the Tabernacle tent required joining ten individual curtains into a single, unified structure. Instead of creating one massive cover, the builders divided the curtains into two distinct sets of five. This specific arrangement was not merely a construction detail, but a careful blend of practical necessity, visual precision, and deep symbolic meaning.

The primary approach among commentators is that these curtains were sewn together lengthwise to form a single unit. The builders did not weave them as one giant piece from the start because creating fabric of such enormous dimensions was practically impossible [חזקוני]. Furthermore, permanently combining all ten curtains would have created an unbearably heavy load, making it incredibly difficult to transport and arrange over the wooden boards. By splitting them into two groups of five, the builders made the physical labor manageable. These two large sections were then temporarily linked together using loops and clasps when setting up the Tabernacle, allowing them to be easily taken apart when it was time to travel [קאסוטו].

The bond between the curtains represented a continuous, permanent partnership rather than just a simple physical seam Following the biblical style of describing paired objects as intimate family members, the curtains are likened to sisters. This highlights that they were completely identical to one another, sharing the exact same form and design This intimate connection extended beyond their physical attachment, demanding strict visual accuracy. Because sewn fabrics naturally align, the specific focus here is on the intricate woven images of the cherubim. These figures had to match perfectly from one curtain to the next so that, when joined, they formed a flawless, continuous picture across the fabric

On a deeper conceptual level, dividing the ten curtains into two sets of five mirrors the structure of the Tablets of the Covenant, which held five Commandments on one stone and five on the other Additionally, the perfect alignment of the cherubim images carries a profound spiritual message. It symbolizes heavenly beings that are all harmoniously guided by a single shepherd. This careful arrangement also serves to distinguish between the varying levels of holiness within the sanctuary, visually separating the curtains of the holy space from the curtains of the Holy of Holies [ספורנו].
