Exodus 26:24Sefaria

The construction of the Tabernacle required precise architectural and engineering planning, particularly when joining heavy wooden boards to form a stable, airtight, and harmonious structure. Designing the connections between these massive beams, especially at the complex corners where the walls met, involved an intricate system of grooves, rings, and exact measurements. At the base, the boards had to fit together perfectly, sitting flush against one another like twins To achieve this seamless alignment, the bottom edges of the boards were grooved. This allowed the wood to extend past its tenons and cover the edges of the silver sockets beneath them, ensuring the sockets did not force a gap between the wooden panels [רש״י, מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, this tight fit was accomplished by carving a protrusion at the bottom of one board that locked directly into a matching groove on the adjacent board [קאסוטו].

Moving upward along the walls, commentators debate the actual shape of these wooden panels. One perspective maintains that the boards were completely straight, retaining a uniform thickness from top to bottom Conversely, another view suggests the boards tapered significantly. In this structural model, the base of each board was a full cubit thick, gradually narrowing as it rose until the top edge was merely the thickness of a single finger

Securing the top of the walls required a dedicated locking mechanism. The primary approach among commentators is that grooves were cut into the top of each board, allowing a single ring to bind and tighten every pair of adjacent panels It remains uncertain whether these rings were permanently embedded in the wood or designed to be removable The Torah omits specific instructions for crafting these rings because they served a strictly technical function in stabilizing the structure, lacking the deeper symbolic or spiritual meaning found in other Tabernacle vessels [העמק דבר]. Historically, utilizing a metal ring or band to reinforce wooden corners was a recognized engineering technique in ancient Egyptian construction [קאסוטו]. Offering a different interpretation, some suggest there was no dedicated ring at the very top. Instead, the top groove extended downward to reach the highest ring used for the crossbars that stabilized the walls

While this method of connection applied to all the boards of the Tabernacle [רמב״ן, מזרחי, מלבי״ם], special attention was given to the two most complex pieces: the boards forming the northwest and southwest corners [ביאור יש״ר, רש״י, שפתי חכמים]. These specific panels required unique cutting and grooving to accommodate the exact thickness of the north and south walls. This precision ensured that the interior corners remained perfectly flush and sealed, without any obstruction from the silver sockets below

Transporting these massive corner pieces presented a significant logistical challenge. To resolve the difficulty of carrying such heavy timber, it is suggested that these two corner boards were narrower than the rest. While the standard boards were a cubit and a half wide, the corner panels measured only half a cubit across. This specific dimension perfectly completed the Tabernacle's interior width of ten cubits, creating a robust corner without relying on impossibly heavy, unmovable beams [קאסוטו].
