Exodus 26:19Sefaria

The structural integrity of the Tabernacle rests upon a highly precise system of wooden boards and silver bases, seamlessly blending practical engineering with profound spiritual meaning. Twenty silver bases supported the wooden boards along the southern wall of the structure [קאסוטו, שטיינזלץ]. The silver used for these supports came from a specific source mentioned later in the Torah: the half-shekel Commandment, a contribution given equally by every individual [אבן עזרא]. To ensure maximum stability, two distinct bases were individually prepared and placed beneath every single board [קאסוטו].

The connection between the wood and the silver was designed for a perfect fit. The bottom edge of each wooden board was carefully cut and grooved to form two square projections [שטיינזלץ]. These projections were then inserted into hollow centers carved out of the silver bases. The remaining thickness of the wooden board rested directly on the upper edges of the base, covering it tightly on all sides. This interlocking method locked the pieces firmly together, granting the entire structure immense strength and stability

Beyond its physical design, this foundation carries a deep message regarding human character. While the materials for the rest of the Tabernacle were gathered through varying degrees of personal generosity, the silver bases were forged from a strictly uniform contribution. As the lowest part and the very foundation of the building, these bases represent humility and the essential self-discipline needed to follow the Torah. Although this basic discipline is only the first step in a person's spiritual growth, it forms the critical, stable ground upon which all higher character traits are built. Just as a fundamental commitment to fulfill the will of God is expected equally from every person, the bases were constructed from an equal donation, providing the necessary strength to uphold the entire spiritual structure [חומש קה״ת].
