Exodus 26:6Sefaria

Building a sacred space requires more than just crafting beautiful individual pieces; it demands connecting them precisely into a single, organic whole. The assembly of the fabrics using gold components is the exact moment when a mere collection of materials transforms into a defined, holy structure. To achieve this, double-headed gold hooks are used. Their curved shape, designed with a strong bend, ensures that they grip the loops tightly without coming apart By inserting one end of the hook into a loop on one fabric and the other end into the parallel loop on the opposite fabric, the pieces are firmly joined together This bond is not merely technical. From the perspective of Jewish law, such as the rules concerning mixed fabrics, this creates an absolutely complete and unified connection [פרדס יוסף].

Once linked, the fabrics form a massive tent measuring forty cubits in length and twenty-eight cubits in width. This unified covering is then spread over the wooden boards of the Tabernacle, which enclose an inner space thirty cubits long, ten cubits wide, and ten cubits high. Commentators calculate the exact drape of the material to understand how it fit the structure. Across the width, ten cubits cover the flat roof, while the remaining eighteen cubits hang down over the boards on the north and south sides. Along the length, thirty cubits cover the roof, with the excess material draping down the western wall. While there is some debate among scholars regarding exactly how the fabrics covered the thickness of the wooden boards, there is a general consensus about the visible areas. At the bottom of the structure, the foundation sockets remain exposed. According to some views, the lowest cubit of the wooden boards is also left uncovered. Additionally, on the eastern side, the fabrics do not cover the pillars at the entrance

The resulting structure is referred to as a single, unified Tabernacle. On a basic level, this term simply describes the complete, unbroken sequence of fabrics that now covers the entire building However, on a deeper conceptual level, it represents a profound philosophical idea. Just as the human body or the universe consists of countless individual parts that come together to form one complete entity, the Tabernacle unites all its distinct components into a single system. This physical unity reflects the absolute unity of God, who encompasses and sustains all levels of reality Even though the various parts of the structure differ in their specific roles and levels of holiness, they are all arranged in perfect harmony, sharing one ultimate purpose: to fulfill the will of their Creator [ספורנו].
