Moving the incense altar through the wilderness requires specially crafted poles made of acacia wood and covered in gold. This gold overlay matches the design of the carrying poles used for other sacred objects in the Tabernacle, such as the Ark of the Covenant [אבן עזרא, קאסוטו].

Despite sharing this outward design, the physical structure of how these poles attach to the incense altar is entirely unique. While the poles of the other sacred objects are threaded through two rings, the poles for the incense altar are inserted differently. Because the altar is so small, it requires a different structural method to hold its carrying poles securely in place [בכור שור].
