Exodus 30:25Sefaria

The creation of the anointing oil is far more than a technical act of pharmacy. It is a precise art combined with deep spiritual intention, designed to set apart and sanctify people and objects for the service of God. The mixture brings together two powerful elements. The oil itself represents separation, permanence, and honor, while the fragrant spices symbolize complete devotion to God, good character, and a good reputation

There are different views on how this sacred oil was prepared. Some suggest the process was relatively simple, involving crushing the spices, placing them directly into the oil, and mixing them thoroughly [רשב"ם]. However, the primary approach among commentators describes a much more complex method of extracting the scents through cooking. First, the crushed spices were soaked in water to release their fragrance. Olive oil was then poured over the water, and the mixture was cooked over a low fire. Once the water completely evaporated, only the oil remained, now deeply saturated with the scent of the spices [רמב"ן, אבן עזרא הקצר, ספורנו, אברבנאל]. This dual process of grinding and cooking creates a profound fusion, where the oil completely absorbs the essence and scent of the spices

Because of this complexity, the preparation requires a master craftsman Different spices react differently to heat, demanding precise knowledge to control the fire and protect the delicate ingredients from being ruined [העמק דבר]. Beyond the technical skill, the final product must project a sense of importance and luxury, making it obvious that it was crafted by a master rather than an ordinary person [חזקוני].

The uniqueness of this oil goes beyond nature and time. Moses was commanded to prepare it himself, and according to tradition, this was the only time in history the anointing oil was ever made. Miraculously, the small amount Moses crafted was preserved for generations. It was used to anoint the Tabernacle, the High Priests, and the kings of the Davidic line, until it was eventually hidden away. During the anointing ceremony, the oil was poured on the head, recognized as the source of wisdom and leadership. Kings were anointed in the shape of a crown to symbolize their royal authority, while priests were anointed in the shape of the Hebrew letter 'Kaf', representing their role as servants of God [אברבנאל].

Ultimately, it is the spiritual intention and focus during the oil's preparation that activates its true power There is a divine promise attached to this process: through this exact and holy creation, the oil receives a supreme, heavenly power to sanctify anyone and anything it touches [העמק דבר].
