Exodus 30:30Sefaria

וְאֶת־אַהֲרֹ֥ן וְאֶת־בָּנָ֖יו תִּמְשָׁ֑ח וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם לְכַהֵ֥ן לִֽי׃

The transition from anointing the inanimate objects of the Tabernacle to anointing human beings marks a vital new phase in the creation of a sacred space. This act of anointing elevates the priests from ordinary individuals into dedicated servants of God, preparing them for their deep spiritual responsibilities.

This directive is meant exclusively for Aaron and his sons, strictly leaving out anyone else [אבן עזרא]. The anointing process signifies their sanctification and is performed using a specially prepared oil [ביאור שטיינזלץ, קאסוטו]. The choice of oil is deliberate; it represents honor and high status, while also hinting at the everlasting nature of the priesthood, since oil can be preserved for a long time without spoiling. Furthermore, the spices mixed into the oil symbolize the good reputation and excellent character traits expected from those who serve God.

There is a clear contrast in how the anointing is applied to people compared to objects. While the Tabernacle vessels were coated entirely, the priests are anointed specifically on their heads, which represent the seat of the intellect and the source of leadership. Additionally, the High Priests were anointed with the oil poured in the shape of the Hebrew letter Kaf. This specific shape serves as a hint to the word Kohen (priest) and to the hands they use in their service to God.

A distinction also exists between regular priests and the High Priests regarding future generations. The regular priests were anointed only once in the desert, and their holy status passed down naturally to their descendants. In contrast, a new High Priest had to be anointed in every generation to highlight his specific selection and his elevated status above his fellow priests [אברבנאל].

Ultimately, there is a fundamental difference between the holiness of the vessels and the holiness of the priests. The Tabernacle vessels were anointed to become sacred objects that would pass on holiness to anything that touched them. Aaron and his sons, however, were anointed to become holy people [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Their anointing is not meant to transfer holiness to other objects, but purely to dedicate them to serve and work before God [הכתב והקבלה, אדרת אליהו]. This ritual serves two main purposes: it acts as a clear, visible sign that God has chosen them, and it prepares them spiritually to receive divine blessing and the presence of the Holy Spirit [אברבנאל].
