פרשת ויקהל

Exodus 35:31Sefaria

Constructing a dwelling place for God required a unique blend of spiritual elevation and broad practical skill. However, the granting of this divine spirit did not happen in a vacuum. God rests His spirit and imparts additional wisdom specifically to those who already possess a baseline of understanding [רא״ש]. Beyond the general traits of wisdom, understanding, and knowledge, God ensured that the artisan received a special, added measure of expertise spanning every type of physical craftsmanship [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This divine inspiration was not restricted to a single individual. God granted wisdom and understanding to anyone who genuinely desired to participate in the construction. He helped them bring their good intentions to life, even if they had absolutely no prior experience in these crafts. The influence of God's spirit during the building of the Tabernacle was so expansive that even the wild animals and livestock present in the area received a measure of understanding from Him [צאינה וראינה].

The specific threefold combination of wisdom, understanding, and knowledge reflects a deep cosmic and historical pattern. These are the exact same qualities through which God established the world itself. Furthermore, these traits serve as the constant foundation for all of God's dwelling places throughout history. They were present when King Solomon built the First Temple, and they will be the very foundation upon which the future Temple is established [דעת זקנים].
