פרשת ויקהל

Exodus 35:29Sefaria

כׇּל־אִ֣ישׁ וְאִשָּׁ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר נָדַ֣ב לִבָּם֮ אֹתָם֒ לְהָבִיא֙ לְכׇל־הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֧ה יְהֹוָ֛ה לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת בְּיַד־מֹשֶׁ֑ה הֵבִ֧יאוּ בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל נְדָבָ֖ה לַיהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}

The construction of the Tabernacle reaches its peak not merely through the gathering of physical materials, but through a massive display of national unity and pure devotion. The conclusion of the donation process reveals the deep spiritual and emotional state of the people. It was exactly through the personal, willing choices of each individual man and woman that the entire nation ultimately brought its collective contribution [קאסוטו, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This moment highlights the eager spirit of the common people. Unlike the nation's leaders who delayed their giving, every ordinary individual felt like an equal partner in the community, stepping forward with a sincere national spirit to provide for the public [רש״ר הירש]. The equal participation of men and women teaches a profound lesson about giving. Before God, there is no difference between someone who gives a large amount and someone who gives a little, or between someone who gives early and someone who gives late. As long as the intention is pure and directed toward heaven, everyone is equally valued and desired by Him [אלשיך].

The purity of this intention was truly remarkable. Human nature dictates that when people give charity, they often hesitate, act out of mixed motives, or later regret their generosity. Yet, among the tens of thousands of Israelites, every person gave perfectly, with absolute sincerity and without a single trace of regret [נחל קדומים]. This flawless state of mind transformed their gifts into perfect, true freewill offerings [אור החיים].

Ultimately, the physical items were not the primary focus, because God desires the heart. There were poor people among the Israelites who had absolutely nothing to give, yet their hearts burned with such a strong passion that they wished they could fund the entire Tabernacle themselves. God, who examines the deepest thoughts of humanity, counted their pure intentions as actual deeds. Their intense desire was considered the essence of the offering, and they are credited as if they had physically provided everything [מלבי״ם, שפתי כהן, אלשיך]. Their hearts truly carried and guided them toward the act of giving [העמק דבר].

Although the Israelites had left Egypt with great wealth, making the physical donation easy for them, divine praise and reward are never granted simply for gold and silver. Instead, God rewards the willingness of the heart and the exercise of free will [שפתי כהן]. Everything was brought with immense joy. The people fulfilled the original divine command, as well as the additions made by Moses, out of a complete sense of willingness and profound love [העמק דבר].
