פרשת ויקהל

Exodus 35:10Sefaria

Building a sanctuary for God requires more than just physical materials; it demands human spirit and dedication. The call to construct the Tabernacle goes beyond gathering material donations, serving as an invitation for the Israelites to contribute their time, energy, and personal abilities [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The invitation to participate is directed at anyone possessing a wise heart, a requirement that has nothing to do with prior professional training. After all, the Israelites were recently freed slaves who spent their days in Egypt doing hard labor with bricks and mortar, not studying architecture [שפתי כהן]. Instead, this wisdom refers to a deep reverence for God. Anyone whose heart is moved by this reverence is welcome to step forward and work, with the assurance that God will help Him succeed [העמק דבר].

Moses addresses the entire nation before officially announcing Bezalel as the chief architect. This sequence is intentional, designed to prevent jealousy and to affirm that the entire nation is wise and worthy because they received the Torah. Bezalel is chosen not because the rest of the people are inadequate, but because he was uniquely destined for this role from the very dawn of creation [שפתי כהן]. Additionally, there is a practical reason for involving the wider public first. In the initial stages, capable individuals are needed to receive and manage the massive influx of donations. Only after all the materials are organized is the actual construction handed over to the master artisans under Bezalel's leadership [מלבי״ם].

The builders are instructed to execute everything exactly as directed, referring to the specific blueprints of the Tabernacle and its tent that were previously shared with the nation [ספורנו]. The true wisdom required of these artisans is found in their discipline. The greatest display of skill is not to try and be clever or to modify the design, but to follow the instructions precisely as God commanded [פרדס יוסף].

The actual process of crafting the sanctuary carries profound religious significance. Every single act of creating an item for the Tabernacle is a Commandment in its own right. In typical construction projects, only the finished building matters. Here, however, the very process of creation requires focused intent. Because the act of making the sanctuary is a Commandment itself, the labor can only be performed by those who are personally obligated to fulfill God's Commandments [צפנת פענח].
