The call for donations to the Tabernacle includes a request for specific, high-quality materials required for the daily holy service and sanctification rituals. Among these items is oil intended for lighting the Menorah [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Although the request simply asks for oil without explicitly demanding pure olive oil, this detail was left out because it was common knowledge. Everyone understood that oil used for lighting was naturally olive oil [אבן עזרא, אבי עזר].

Asking individuals to donate such items, however, is quite surprising. The request implies that these materials were casually in the possession of the donors. It is difficult to imagine that such unique, premium oil would be readily available to private individuals wandering through the desert [ברכת אשר על התורה].

Alongside the oil, the Israelites are asked to bring spices. These specific ingredients are needed to prepare the anointing oil and to create the incense [רשב״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond the practical need for these donations, there is a deeper conceptual layer connecting a person's actions to their ultimate reward. A deeper interpretation links the request for spices to the One who dwells in heaven. This suggests a spiritual exchange: when a person gives their own oil to bring light into the Tabernacle, they earn a special reward from God. He, in turn, will bring light to that person's own soul, as the human soul is compared to a divine lamp [שפתי כהן].
