פרשת ויקהל

Exodus 35:6Sefaria

וּתְכֵ֧לֶת וְאַרְגָּמָ֛ן וְתוֹלַ֥עַת שָׁנִ֖י וְשֵׁ֥שׁ וְעִזִּֽים׃

Constructing the Tabernacle required an array of luxurious materials, including fine fabrics, dyed wool, linen, and animal hair. The dyed fabrics were spun from sheep's wool and featured three distinct, rich colors. The first was a deep, dark blue, typically produced using the blood of a specific sea snail [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, there is a view that the required donation was not the pre-dyed wool, but the snails themselves. This is because the act of dyeing materials for the Tabernacle and the priestly garments required a specific, explicit intention at the exact moment the color was applied [צפנת פענח].

The second color was a highly expensive purplish-red. While this dye was also commonly extracted from various types of sea snails [ביאור שטיינזלץ], an alternative perspective suggests it was derived from the leaves of a specific plant [צפנת פענח]. The third color was a bright, radiant red, produced using a dye extracted from insects found in the mountains [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A strict rule governed the gathering of these materials. The wool had to be sheared from live sheep, never taken from an animal that had already died. Similarly, the creatures used to produce the dyes had to be alive when harvested [צפנת פענח]. Beyond the vibrant dyed wool, the construction of the Tabernacle also relied on clean, pure linen and tightly braided goat hair [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
