Exodus 35:26Sefaria

The preparation of the Tabernacle coverings was defined by extraordinary dedication and unparalleled skill. The women who volunteered for this sacred task approached their work with an elevated spiritual state, acting beyond ordinary human limits to ensure success and bring God's presence to rest among the Israelites

Their contribution was marked by deep understanding and noble character. While others rushed to craft the vibrant, colorful fabrics meant for the interior of the sanctuary, these women chose to work with goat hair. Though these exterior curtains were much more modest in appearance, they were absolutely essential for protecting the entire structure [רש ר הירש]. Working with goat hair to create the tent coverings and ropes was an incredibly complex craft. Commentators agree that spinning goat hair is significantly more difficult than spinning sheep's wool, demanding an exceptional level of skill

However, the primary approach among commentators is that this work involved a rare and miraculous technique: the women spun the hair while it was still attached to the bodies of the living goats The distinct mention of their unique wisdom in this context, as opposed to the standard manual labor described for other materials, points to this highly unusual method Some suggest this process functioned as a painless shedding of the animal's hair [רש ר הירש].

There are several fascinating reasons why this complex method of spinning directly from the living animal was chosen. Aesthetically, materials retain an extra measure of natural shine and superior quality when they are not severed from their source of growth [ספורנו]. Furthermore, since the goat hair was left uncolored, it had to remain absolutely spotless. Spinning directly on the animal minimized handling, preventing the material from getting dirty

This approach also solved significant spiritual and legal concerns. Many women worried that they might be in a state of ritual impurity, which would disqualify their work. Because a living animal cannot contract ritual impurity, spinning on the live goats guaranteed that the materials remained completely pure [פרדס יוסף]. Additionally, since a woman's standard earnings typically belonged to her husband, a question arose regarding how they could personally donate this material. By skipping the shearing process and spinning directly from the animal, the women saved a considerable amount of time. The products of this extra, saved time belonged exclusively to them, allowing them to contribute from their own property [חנוכת התורה]. Finally, although women were generally exempt from the core construction duties of the sanctuary, performing this task through such extraordinary wisdom rather than standard labor allowed them to actively participate in building the tent [צפנת פענח].
