יחזקאל, פרק א׳, פסוק י״ז

Ezekiel 1:17Sefaria

עַל־אַרְבַּ֥עַת רִבְעֵיהֶ֖ן בְּלֶכְתָּ֣ם יֵלֵ֑כוּ לֹ֥א יִסַּ֖בּוּ בְּלֶכְתָּֽן׃

The divine chariot operates with a flawless sense of motion, where its massive wheels possess the ability to travel freely in any direction without limitation [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Much like the holy creatures they accompany, these wheels are always ready to roll wherever they are needed. When changing course, they do not have to physically pivot or turn on their axis; they simply continue moving instantly toward the new destination [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

While this unique ability to move without turning was already established regarding the creatures, it is highlighted again for the wheels to emphasize the perfect synchronization within the chariot. The wheels are built with this exact capability so they never slow down or delay the movement of the creatures stationed above them [רש״י]. This tight bond ensures that the wheels move in exact harmony with the four directions of the creatures, never needing to pivot, just as the creatures never pivot [אברבנאל].

Beyond the immediate structure of the chariot, this constant, unbending movement serves as a symbol for the broader systems of the universe. Rather than representing basic physical matter, the wheels can be understood as the celestial bodies in the sky, maintaining a stable motion that never strays from its set path [אברבנאל]. Expanding on this cosmic theme, the motion of the wheels is also tied to the cycles of time and nature. The four directions symbolize the four quarters of the day, which bring shifting winds, as well as the four seasons of the year. The ability of the wheels to cover all sides without turning mirrors the fixed, continuous journey of the stars from east to west and north to south. It is this steady celestial movement that ultimately drives the changing of the seasons and the shifts between cold and heat throughout the entire world [מלבי״ם].
