The vision of the heavenly chariot presents complex spiritual figures that act in perfect harmony while maintaining their distinct individuality. Part of their essence remains visible, while another part is deeply concealed. A subtle separation in the description of the creatures' faces and their wings leads to two primary ways of understanding their upper structure. One perspective focuses on the visual arrangement. The faces appeared exactly as they were previously envisioned, while the wings were spread upward and separated from the body, ready for flight [רד״ק]. Others suggest that the wings were spread upward in a way that actively covered the faces of the creatures [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון].
A more symbolic approach views the distinct separation of the faces and wings as a representation of spiritual hierarchy and divine interaction. This separation highlights the vast distance between these spiritual entities and God, who is the ultimate cause and exists far above them [אברבנאל]. Structurally, while the creatures shared a single connected body at their base, their upper sections branched out into four distinct directions. This division symbolizes how different divine attributes, such as kindness and strict justice, or even various earthly kingdoms, operate independently with their own unique power, even when one attribute takes the lead [מלבי״ם].
The four wings of each creature served two distinct purposes. Two wings were dedicated to flight and were physically linked to the wings of the adjacent creature [רש״י, שטיינזלץ]. This connection demonstrates that they all move together toward a single, unified purpose according to the command of their Creator [מלבי״ם], a motion that also hints at the rotation of the heavenly spheres [אברבנאל].
The remaining two wings wrapped around and covered the bodies of the creatures from every side [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Beyond the simple physical act of covering, this serves as a profound symbol of concealment. The covered body represents the pure spiritual essence of these beings, which remains entirely hidden from human comprehension, as a physical mind is simply incapable of grasping abstract spiritual reality. Furthermore, this covering represents the overwhelming, hidden light that flows upon them from God, a brilliance too profound to be understood [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם].
