Ezekiel 1:27Sefaria

At the climax of the heavenly vision, the prophet lifts his eyes toward the figure seated upon the throne, encountering a revelation split into two distinct dimensions of spiritual understanding. This division reflects the profound boundary between the unknowable essence of God and the ways He interacts with the world.

Focusing on the upper half of the figure, from the waist upward, the vision presents an image of pure, exceptionally clear fire. The sheer intensity of its brightness is almost too much for the human eye to bear This radiant vision carries a deep warning about human limitations. The concept used to describe this brilliance contains a dual meaning of silence and speech, conveying that when confronted with the very essence of God, a person must remain silent. One must avoid speaking about or investigating matters that lie far beyond human comprehension. Because of this profound boundary, the early Sages established that one is not permitted to gaze into or deeply analyze this specific part of the vision

Accompanying this brilliant core is an appearance of fire that acts as an enclosure. There are different ways to understand the structure of this fire. One approach suggests that the fire burns deep within the brilliant core itself Another perspective views the fire as an outer layer that entirely surrounds the core, much like a house encloses the person inside. This surrounding fire symbolizes the divine energy bursting outward, while simultaneously acting as a protective barrier. It serves as a warning against attempting to peer into the hidden, internal brilliance Ultimately, when looking at this upper dimension, the prophet cannot grasp the inner essence at all; he is only able to perceive its outer garment, which manifests as a fiery shell [מלבי"ם].

The vision sharply contrasts this upper realm with the lower half of the figure, from the waist downward. While the upper half represents God's hidden essence—where silence is required [אברבנאל]—the lower half represents His actions and the flow of energy descending into the physical world. Because human beings can achieve some understanding of how God acts in the world, the warning of silence is no longer present in this lower dimension. Here, the prophet sees only the appearance of fire, which represents strict justice and the powerful energy flowing downward. Yet, this fire is wrapped in a surrounding, radiant glow. This bright light reveals a comforting truth: the ultimate purpose of God's strict justice is to bring light, show mercy, and bestow goodness upon all of creation
