Ezekiel 1:5Sefaria

Out of the stormy winds and radiant glow of the unfolding vision, distinct figures begin to take shape. As the storm draws closer, the blinding light gives way to the clear forms of four living creatures, which serve as the driving force behind the Divine Chariot These figures take the shape of living, animate beings

On a deeper level, these creatures represent a specific camp of angels with a unique historical purpose. Earlier prophets experienced visions of God guiding the world through open, direct miracles, carried out by angels known as Seraphim. However, this vision takes place during a time of exile, a period when Divine leadership is hidden and operates behind the veil of natural laws. These natural laws are symbolized by the wheels of the Chariot. The four living creatures occupy a spiritual middle ground between the highest angels and these wheels of nature. Their specific role is to drive the forces of nature and history, guiding the spiritual princes of the four great empires that rule the earth to fulfill God's exact will [מלבי״ם].

The general appearance and physical structure of these four creatures is strikingly human This presents a conceptual challenge, as the vision later reveals that these beings also possess the faces of a lion, an ox, and an eagle. One perspective explains that the human form is the most significant of all the figures, highlighted specifically to elevate the glory of the Chariot. Moreover, this human likeness reflects the exact facial features of the Patriarch Jacob [רש״י].

Another approach resolves the challenge by distinguishing between the creatures' faces and their bodies. While their faces display animal forms, their actual bodies are entirely human, standing upright on two legs and possessing hands. Furthermore, this human comparison extends beyond mere physical shape into their inner essence. God endowed these creatures with human wisdom and understanding, granting them the profound ability to comprehend, praise, and glorify Him [מלבי״ם].
