Genesis 34:11Sefaria

The tense negotiations over a captive daughter suddenly shift from broad diplomacy to a desperate, personal plea. After the local ruler concludes his sweeping political proposals, Jacob's sons meet his words with silence. Unable to contain himself in the face of this quiet resistance, Shechem interrupts the conversation, driven by eagerness and impatience [ביאור יש״ר, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. While his father focused on national alliances and cultural integration, Shechem cares only about his private interests and his immediate desire to secure the marriage [העמק דבר, מלבי״ם].

He approaches the father and brothers with a mix of respect and striking intimacy. Speaking as though he is already an inseparable part of the family, his tone is far more direct and honoring than his father's [ברכת אשר על התורה]. His plea to find favor in their eyes is an attempt to calm their anger over his despicable actions, serving essentially as a request for forgiveness [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, he uses this approach to grant the family immense honor, presenting them as such important figures that their agreement would be viewed as a profound act of grace and an unearned gift toward him [אלשיך].

A clear division emerges between father and son regarding the terms of the arrangement. The father had asked for the young woman without offering any financial return. Fearing the brothers would reject such a one-sided deal, Shechem quickly jumps in to promise any amount of wealth they demand [אלשיך]. He offers this fortune as direct compensation for the shame and damage he caused [מלבי״ם]. His ultimate hope is that even if the family rejects a broader political alliance with the locals, the promise of massive wealth and lavish gifts might persuade them to accept this single, private match [העמק דבר].
