Genesis 34:14Sefaria

In response to a sudden marriage proposal, Jacob’s sons establish a strict physical and religious condition, cleverly shifting the focus away from the assault that preceded the offer. In discussing the future of the young woman, they speak on behalf of their father, taking responsibility for her as their sister [רבנו בחיי]. This protective stance extends to any woman living under the care of an Israelite family [העמק דבר].

The brothers firmly refuse any union with an uncircumcised man. The foreskin is understood as an outer layer of skin that acts as an unnecessary burden. Removing it does not imply a flaw in the way God formed the human body. Rather, it is an action intended to bring a person to moral completion, much like cutting the umbilical cord, which God created with the specific intention that it be severed [אבן עזרא, מחוקקי יהודה].

The core reason the brothers provide for their refusal is that such a marriage would be a profound disgrace. The primary approach among commentators is that marrying an uncircumcised man creates a deep, multi-generational social stain, as the condition itself is considered an insult and a derogatory mark. Furthermore, agreeing to the match might create the false impression that there are no worthy, circumcised men available for marriage [ספורנו]. Alternatively, this disgrace is viewed as a practical fear of future mockery. If the physical differences between the two groups remain, the local population might eventually mock the Israelites, viewing their unique physical covenant as a bodily defect [חזקוני, צאינה וראינה].

Ultimately, this entire argument is woven into a justified deception directed at those who harmed their family. The brothers deliberately ignore the terrible act of defilement that already occurred, presenting a false front where the only barrier to marriage is a simple physical condition [מלבי״ם]. Because the attacker attempted to hide his vile actions, the brothers answer him using his own methods, creating a negotiation that appears entirely practical and businesslike. The trap succeeds. The attacker mistakenly believes that by merely removing his foreskin, the shame of his crime will be erased and the families will peacefully merge, completely blind to the brothers' hidden intentions [העמק דבר, ביאור יש״ר, מחוקקי יהודה].
