II Chronicles 25:8Sefaria

Victory on the battlefield does not depend on having a larger army or superior military strength. Instead, true success rests entirely on absolute trust in God and His direct guidance.

When confronting the reality of war, there are different ways to understand the prophetic message given regarding military preparations. One perspective views the message as a sharp challenge or warning. It suggests that if the leader refuses to believe the prophet, he can go ahead and try to build up his forces for battle [רש"י]. However, even if he gathers a massive army and relies on natural tactics, his efforts will be completely useless On the other hand, a different approach reads the message as a strict, practical instruction. He is ordered to go into battle alone, leaving behind any hired Israelite soldiers If he tries to build his military power by bringing in extra troops, God will actively cause him to fail rather than help him [רלב"ג].

There is a clear, underlying condition at play. If the warning is ignored and the hired army is brought along, God will ensure defeat God possesses the ultimate power to either help or hinder. He has the strength to secure a victory even without any reinforcements, just as He has the power to cause a defeat if one chooses to rely on extra soldiers [רש"י, רד"ק].

Ultimately, the success of the Israelites is not determined by the normal rules of nature, statistics, or military strategy. It is directed entirely by God. He holds the power to support the weak who place their trust in Him, and to bring down the strong who rely only on their physical power and human might [רלב"ג, מלבי"ם].
