King Amaziah obeys the prophet's words and dismisses the mercenary troops he had hired for the upcoming battle. He actively separates the soldiers of Ephraim from the ranks of his own men from Judah [מצודת דוד], ordering the hired troops to return home.

Being removed from the military campaign deeply angers the dismissed soldiers. They feel intense humiliation at being sent away without getting the chance to fight. Their fury is directed specifically at the people of Judah, as the mercenaries assume that the local soldiers are the ones who pressured the king to dismiss them. They believe this rejection stems from deep-seated hatred, convincing themselves that the men of Judah simply do not want to fight alongside them [מלבי״ם]. Filled with resentment, the mercenaries leave the camp and make their way back home in a bitter rage.
