II Chronicles 25:19Sefaria

A king's recent battlefield success can easily turn from rightful confidence into dangerous arrogance. In a tense diplomatic exchange, the king of Israel delivers a harsh message to the king of Judah, directly exposing the reckless motives behind a sudden push for war. The king of Israel points out that Judah's recent victory over Edom, a relatively small nation, has inflated its leader's ego. This triumph has filled his heart with hubris and a false sense of superiority

The primary approach among commentators is that this newfound arrogance has sparked a relentless pursuit of honor. Emboldened by military success, the king of Judah seeks to increase his kingdom's glory, even at the expense of Israel, under the dangerous illusion that the two nations are equal in strength Alternatively, some view this drive not merely as a thirst for prestige, but as a compulsion to multiply conflicts, pushing the king to constantly manufacture new wars [רד״ק].

In light of this, the king of Israel offers blunt advice: stay home. Since the king of Judah has already secured a measure of respect from his victory over Edom, he would be wise to remain within his borders and protect the dignity he has already achieved. True honor, in this situation, is found in rest and stability This idea is supported by a parallel historical account that explicitly connects staying home with maintaining one's dignity, reinforcing that preserving existing achievements is the highest form of respect [רש״י, מלבי״ם].

The message concludes with a severe warning against creating unnecessary strife [מצודת ציון]. The king of Israel cautions his rival against provoking a fight that will only bring disaster. Such a reckless provocation will inevitably result in a tragic and entirely avoidable defeat for the king and all the people of Judah
