God accepted the Temple as the chosen site for prayer and supplication, but He accompanied this acceptance with a clear warning. The future of the Temple, the continuation of Solomon's royal dynasty, and the ability of the Israelites to remain in their land all depended entirely on the actions of the people and their kings. If the nation were to sin, all of these blessings could be lost [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

In the event of such a tragic destruction, observers would naturally ask why such terrible ruin befell the nation and its land. Those who witness the devastation will speak up and provide a direct answer to this question [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. They will explain that the punishment was brought upon them by God, the God of their ancestors, because the people abandoned Him in favor of idol worship [מצודת דוד].
