II Chronicles 7:17Sefaria

God establishes a clear condition for King Solomon regarding the survival and continuation of his royal dynasty. To secure this future, Solomon must follow the path of his father, David. This requires a strict commitment to carefully perform everything God commanded and to closely guard His laws and judgments [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

When comparing this account to the parallel record in the Book of Kings, a significant difference emerges in how the condition is presented. The other account adds a specific demand for Solomon to act with absolute integrity of heart and uprightness. That requirement points to a perfect, pure level of devotion, where Commandments are fulfilled entirely for their own sake, without any outside motives. The absence of that specific demand here reveals an additional layer to the divine promise. It indicates that even if Solomon's actions lack perfect purity and he observes God's Commandments with mixed intentions, a reward is still guaranteed.

This shift in expectations directly affects the type of reward granted. Perfect, pure observance earns a complete and eternal rule over the entire nation of Israel, a status that was given purely as a conditional promise. However, a lesser level of observance still secures a foundational royal legacy. God made a special covenant guaranteeing that a descendant of David will always maintain some form of ruling position in Israel, even if that authority is limited and does not extend over the entire nation [מלבי״ם].
