The man approaches with his clothes torn and dust upon his head, physical displays that serve as clear expressions of deep mourning [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון]. Upon reaching David, he immediately falls to the ground and bows. This action goes beyond simple respect; it is a formal recognition of David as the new ruler [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
