An Amalekite youth stands before David to recount the final moments of King Saul, casting himself as the one who delivered the fatal blow. He claims that he merely finished off the king, completing the death of a man who was already severely wounded and dying [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, a subtle grammatical shift in his recorded claim hints at a hidden truth. According to early sages, the youth was lying. He never actually killed Saul, who had already died from falling on his own sword, and the unusual phrasing serves as a testament to this deception [רד״ק].

To clear himself of any guilt and present his act as a mercy killing, the young man insists that Saul's death was entirely unavoidable. The primary approach among commentators is that the king had no chance of survival due to the fatal wound he suffered when he fell on his weapon [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, רד״ק, אברבנאל]. Additionally, enemy horsemen had already closed in on him, leaving absolutely no path for escape [רלב״ג, רד״ק]. Based on this bleak reality, the youth frames his story as simply answering the king's desperate plea to hasten his end [רד״ק, אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Following the king's death, the youth strips him of his royal insignia. He takes the crown—a decorated golden band that serves as the ultimate symbol of kingship [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]—and an expensive, ornamental bracelet worn on the arm [רש״י, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He brings these items to David driven by pure political calculation. Fully aware that Saul had relentlessly hunted David, the Amalekite assumes that delivering the symbols of power to the man now destined to wear them will guarantee him a handsome reward [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
