I Chronicles 2:54Sefaria

The family tree of Salma, the son of Caleb, branches out to encompass major families and entire cities within the territory of Judah. As a founding patriarch, his lineage extends to all the subsequent groups and locations documented in this record [מלבי״ם]. Salma is recognized as the father and founder of the inhabitants of Bethlehem [רד״ק, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם]. His descendants also established themselves in Netophah, a city in Judah [רש״י, מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ], though some suggest this name refers specifically to a distinct family line among his offspring rather than a geographic location [רד״ק, רלב״ג].

The lineage continues with Atroth-beth-joab. Commentators offer different perspectives on its identity, with some identifying it as a specific family [רד״ק, רלב״ג, מצודת דוד], while others understand it to be a city populated entirely by the descendants of Salma. The specific addition of the name Joab was necessary to distinguish this settlement from other cities that were also called Atroth [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].

A geographic and family split further characterizes Salma's descendants. The primary approach among commentators is that the final groups represent places or families connected to the area of Zorah, which Salma's descendants captured and settled. A closer look reveals that the population of the city of Manahath was divided between two different lineages. While one half of the city descended from Shobal, the other half, which maintained ties to the Zorah region, originated from Salma [מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ]. The name Manahath itself is rooted in the concept of camping and resting. It draws its name from the historical Camp of Dan, marking the very area where the tribe of Dan camped and rested during their journey to war [מלבי״ם].
