I Chronicles 2:21Sefaria

A late-in-life union weaves together two prestigious lineages, bridging the tribes of Judah and Manasseh. This significant family expansion takes place entirely while the Israelites are still living in the Egyptian exile [רד״ק]. The events unfold well into Hezron's life, occurring only after he has already established a family and fathered his first sons Entering this relationship at the age of sixty highlights his advanced years, standing in sharp contrast to the marriages of his youth [רד״ק].

The exact nature of this connection is viewed in different ways. One perspective suggests a standard marriage, with Hezron taking her as a wife either after being widowed or in addition to his existing wives [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another view proposes that she is taken as a concubine rather than a full wife. Under this interpretation, the daughter of Machir accepts a union with two distinct disadvantages: the lack of full marital status and a significantly older partner. Nevertheless, her family consents to the arrangement out of deep respect for the honor and prestige associated with the tribe of Judah [רש״י].

Machir, the father of the bride, is known by his connection to his son, Gilead. Identifying a parent by their famous offspring is a recognized convention in biblical narratives Gilead eventually grows into such a prominent and renowned figure that an entire geographic region adopts his family's name, establishing Machir as the lord of that land. Ultimately, this late union results in the birth of a new son, Segub.
