I Chronicles 2:18Sefaria

Tracing the influential families within the tribe of Judah reveals the lineage of Caleb, the son of Hezron and grandson of Perez [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Though Caleb was not the firstborn, his name appears before his older brother, Jerahmeel. This placement is a deliberate mark of honor, recognizing Caleb's distinguished role as a leader among his people [מצודת דוד].

The exact identity of this Caleb is a subject of historical debate. While early sages identify him as the famous Caleb, son of Jephunneh, who scouted the land of Canaan and rejected the counsel of the other spies, a straightforward reading of the timeline makes this unlikely. Hezron, this Caleb's father, was among the original Israelites who left Egypt, whereas the famous scout testified that he was only forty years old during the second year of the Exodus [רד"ק]. What is certain is the profound legacy of this family line, as it eventually produced Bezalel, the master craftsman who built the Tabernacle [רלב"ג].

The presentation of Caleb's immediate family raises an interesting puzzle, as the phrasing seemingly suggests that he gave birth to his own wives, Azubah and Jerioth. The primary approach among commentators resolves this by explaining that the text is simply using brief language to state that Caleb fathered children with his wife Azubah and with another woman named Jerioth [רד"ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Azubah is explicitly identified as a wife to emphasize her status as the primary spouse, while Jerioth may have been a concubine [רלב"ג].

Other scholars maintain a literal reading of the birth phrasing, concluding that the names actually refer to Caleb's daughters rather than his wives. One perspective suggests that Caleb had a wife named Azubah, but he named his daughter after her, calling the child by the full title "Azubah Ishah" [רש"י]. Another view proposes that Azubah was indeed the wife, but Jerioth was the daughter born to her [רלב"ג]. Taking this a step further, a unique opinion argues that the daughter's complete name was the compound phrase "Ve'et Jerioth," similar to other biblical names that incorporate linking letters [מלבי"ם].

The record concludes by listing three males: Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. Following the primary view, these three are understood to be the direct sons of Caleb's first wife, Azubah [מצודת דוד, רד"ק]. However, according to the alternative interpretations that identify Jerioth as Caleb's daughter, these three males are actually his grandsons, born to Jerioth [רלב"ג, מלבי"ם].
