I Chronicles 7:17Sefaria

וּבְנֵ֥י אוּלָ֖ם בְּדָ֑ן אֵ֚לֶּה בְּנֵ֣י גִלְעָ֔ד בֶּן־מָכִ֖יר בֶּן־מְנַשֶּֽׁה׃

The genealogical records of the tribe of Manasseh are carefully structured to organize and clarify the generational lineage of the family. Rather than introducing a brand-new family line, focusing on the descendants of Gilead serves as a critical marker to clarify specific relationships. The primary approach among commentators is that this points back to figures mentioned earlier, primarily Asriel and Zelophehad. The goal is to define their exact place in the family tree. Although they were previously grouped together with the general descendants of Manasseh, they were not his direct children. Instead, they traced their lineage specifically through Gilead, with Asriel being Gilead's son and Zelophehad his grandson.

Alternatively, [מלבי״ם] views this section as a deliberate editorial shortcut. According to this perspective, after presenting new details about the broader family, the author simply copies the official heading of Gilead's family line from ancient genealogical records. However, the full list of sons and family heads is intentionally left out. Since these names are already well-known from the Torah or earlier chapters, repeating them would offer no new insight. The reference thus functions merely as a brief outline, acting almost as if the word "etcetera" follows it. This signals to the reader that the rest of the familiar lineage has been purposefully skipped to maintain brevity.
