The family line of Shemer features a list of descendants that carries unique names and ancient traditions. At first glance, the opening of this family record can be slightly misleading. The first word appears to be a common term for a family relative, translating simply as "brother." In reality, however, this is not a title at all, but rather the actual first name of Shemer's oldest son, Ahi [מצודת דוד].

As the family record continues, it reveals the careful way ancient names were preserved and passed down through generations. There is a distinct difference between how some of these names were originally recorded in writing and how they were traditionally spoken aloud [מנחת שי]. For example, the name Rohgah was written with an extra letter, yet the long-standing oral tradition dictates reading it without that addition. Similarly, the name Hubbah was originally written starting with one specific letter, but the spoken tradition alters it to another. Following this accepted reading tradition, the four sons of Shemer are firmly identified as Ahi, Rohgah, Hubbah, and Aram [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
