Reconstructing family trees after a long exile presents a unique challenge, often resulting in partial or fragmented records. The genealogies documented in the Book of Chronicles reflect this reality, occasionally listing individuals and families whose exact identities and tribal affiliations are unclear.

Among these figures are Shuppim and Huppim, the sons of Ir. The primary approach among commentators is that Ir refers to Iri the son of Bela, an individual mentioned earlier in the broader family tree. Shuppim and Huppim were his sons and acted as the heads of their respective family households [מלבי״ם].

The lineage continues with Hushim, the son of Aher. Aher was likely a well-known person during that era [מלבי״ם]. It is highly probable that he is someone already mentioned in previous family lists who simply went by two different names [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. Although Hushim is listed as a single individual, he is introduced in the plural as the sons of Aher. This reflects the nature of the older source documents, which originally included additional brothers. Ezra the Scribe chose not to copy their names because those brothers were entirely absorbed into the primary household established by Hushim [מלבי״ם].

The brief, isolated appearance of these individuals is a direct result of how the records were compiled. Ezra recorded these details with extreme brevity, faithfully copying exactly what he found in the ancient genealogical scrolls or what was handed down to him through tradition [רד״ק]. Furthermore, Ezra himself was uncertain whether these specific families actually belonged to the tribe of Benjamin. Because of this doubt, he chose to list them separately rather than assign them a definitive tribal identity [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. An additional layer of uncertainty surrounded Huppim in particular. Another biblical record mentions that Machir took a wife for Huppim, a detail that made it even more difficult to determine his exact place within the family structure [רש״י].
