I Chronicles 7:29Sefaria

וְעַל־יְדֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־מְנַשֶּׁ֗ה בֵּית־שְׁאָ֤ן וּבְנֹתֶ֙יהָ֙ תַּעְנַ֣ךְ וּבְנֹתֶ֔יהָ מְגִדּ֥וֹ וּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָ דּ֣וֹר וּבְנוֹתֶ֑יהָ בְּאֵ֙לֶּה֙ יָֽשְׁב֔וּ בְּנֵ֥י יוֹסֵ֖ף בֶּן־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ {פ}

The inheritance of Joseph's descendants covered vast stretches of the land of Israel, spanning from the central mountain region all the way to the northern valleys and the coastal plain. The territories of these tribes were established in close geographic proximity to one another [רש״י, רד״ק]. However, there are different perspectives on the exact layout of this shared border. One approach suggests that the cities belonging to the tribe of Ephraim were situated directly adjacent to the lands of Manasseh [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. Conversely, another perspective clarifies that it was the descendants of Manasseh—specifically those who crossed the Jordan River with the rest of the nation rather than remaining on the eastern bank—who settled right beside the territory of Ephraim [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Within this broader region, specific major cities such as Beth-shean, Taanach, Megiddo, and Dor, along with their surrounding satellite towns, belonged to the inheritance of the tribe of Manasseh, echoing the borders outlined in the Book of Joshua [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. Geographically, this expansion reached as far north as Megiddo and stretched westward to the coastal city of Dor [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Ultimately, the descendants of Joseph populated this entire divided region. The tribe of Ephraim lived in their designated cities, such as Bethel, while the tribe of Manasseh inhabited their own areas, including Beth-shean and its surrounding towns [מצודת דוד]. Together, these two tribes successfully established their permanent home, taking root throughout the central region of Samaria [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
