A prophecy of doom is directed at the King of Israel as a consequence of his severe sins. God sends a messenger to deliver a harsh warning about the impending fate awaiting the king and his household. The messenger chosen for this heavy burden is a prophet named Jehu son of Hanani. Beyond his name, history records absolutely nothing else about his identity or background [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. His sole mission is to confront King Baasha.
The content of the rebuke is clear and absolute. Because Baasha actively chose to walk down the same dark path as his predecessor, Jeroboam, and perpetuated his wicked actions, he is condemned to suffer the exact same downfall. The prophet declares that as a direct result of these choices, Baasha, his family, and his entire following will be completely wiped out [אברבנאל].
