I Kings 16:29Sefaria

The rise of Ahab to the throne marks a profound political and spiritual shift in the history of the kingdom. His reign begins during the thirty-eighth year of King Asa of Judah. This timeline aligns with the reign of his father, Omri, who took the throne following the death of Zimri in Asa's twenty-seventh year. After Omri ruled for twelve years, the leadership passed directly to Ahab [מצודת דוד]. Ahab's own reign lasted for twenty-two years, a calculation that includes partial calendar years counted as full ones in the royal records [מצודת דוד]. He established his center of power in Samaria, firmly cementing it as the official capital of the kingdom [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond the political milestones, Ahab's rise represents a devastating turning point for the nation's spiritual life. His rule was defined by a level of wickedness that eclipsed not only his father but all the kings who came before him. The severity of his actions was so extreme that even his most minor offenses were viewed as equal to the absolute worst sins committed by former corrupt leaders like Jeroboam. While earlier rulers initiated the spiritual decay of the people, Ahab introduced entirely new forms of evil that had never been seen before, far exceeding the misdeeds of his father. This sharp moral decline was heavily driven by the influence of his wife, Jezebel, the daughter of the king of Sidon. Under her guidance, Ahab actively bowed down and devoted himself to the worship of the idol Baal [אברבנאל].
