The reign of King Ahab marks a devastating spiritual turning point for the Kingdom of Israel, shifting from misguided internal practices to the full embrace of a foreign, pagan religion. Past kings had certainly failed, but Ahab viewed the transgressions of his predecessor, Jeroboam, as minor offenses, actively choosing to commit far graver sins [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. While Jeroboam had introduced golden calves, he still framed them as a legitimate way to worship the God of Israel. Ahab, however, crossed a profound boundary by introducing worship aimed entirely at an alien deity [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The root of this rapid decline was Ahab's marriage to Jezebel. Originally arranged to secure foreign relations with a neighboring kingdom, the political alliance had disastrous domestic consequences, flooding the land with idol worship [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that her father, Ethbaal, was the reigning king of Zidon. However, another perspective views the title "daughter of Ethbaal" as a description of Jezebel's spiritual condition, indicating that she never converted and remained deeply devoted to her foreign god [רלב״ג].

Ahab did not merely tolerate his wife's religious practices; he actively participated in them. His involvement was so deep that he physically traveled to Zidon to worship Baal and accept him as a deity, only later importing the cult and building an altar for it in Samaria [רד״ק]. Driven by Jezebel's influence, this specific worship of Baal was exceptionally vile and alien, involving cruel rituals such as child sacrifice. This horrific practice stood apart from other forms of idolatry that Ahab pursued on his own accord, such as planting sacred trees [מלבי״ם].
