I Kings 16:25Sefaria

The reign of Omri marks a devastating spiritual low point in the history of the Kingdom of Israel. The corruption during this era intensified far beyond anything the nation had previously experienced, establishing a legacy of unparalleled wrongdoing [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The specific nature of this extreme decline is understood in two distinct ways. One perspective suggests that Omri actively expanded the nation's spiritual failures. Rather than simply maintaining the established sinful practices introduced by Jeroboam, he introduced entirely new forms of idol worship that had never been practiced before, actively compounding the nation's guilt [מלבי״ם, רלב״ג].

An alternative approach focuses not on the invention of new sins, but on a profound moral blindness. Omri personally witnessed the complete collapse and destruction of the royal houses of Jeroboam and Baasha as a direct result of their wickedness. Yet, he completely ignored these clear warnings. His decision to continue down the exact same path, despite seeing the severe punishments dealt to his predecessors, drastically magnified his guilt. It is this stubborn refusal to learn from history that ultimately made his actions far more severe than those of any king who ruled before him [רלב״ג].
