ישעיהו, פרק ל״ב, פסוק ד׳

Isaiah 32:4Sefaria

A profound spiritual and intellectual transformation is on the horizon, promising to heal deep-seated human flaws like impulsiveness and poor communication. This process serves as a direct repair for a previous state of spiritual numbness, where the people suffered from an unfeeling heart. With the arrival of salvation, their senses of understanding and intellectual powers will be significantly strengthened [מלבי״ם].

The first stage of this transformation focuses on the repair of human thought. Impatient and restless individuals, who previously acted with haste and lacked a settled mind, will undergo a complete change [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Because of this impulsiveness, such people were often considered foolish and gullible [רד״ק, שד״ל, אבן עזרא]. Moving forward, they will gain clarity and peace of mind, allowing them to properly understand the word of God. In the past, they pretended to be foolish or incapable of speaking clearly simply to avoid internalizing God's messages [רד״ק]. Now, however, their understanding will stem from a genuine desire to know the truth, rather than an urge to mock or provoke [מלבי״ם].

Following the repair of thought comes the healing of speech. Those with heavy tongues, who once struggled to articulate their thoughts or spoke in a disordered manner [רש״י, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אבן עזרא], will suddenly produce pure, bright, and clear words [מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא]. The primary approach among commentators is that this represents a literal healing of the ability to express oneself. People who once found it difficult to talk will suddenly speak fluently, quickly, and without hesitation, successfully communicating clear ideas [שד״ל]. Taking this a step further, [מלבי״ם] adds a social dimension to this process, explaining that they will not only understand these concepts themselves but will speak clearly enough to teach others.

Offering a different perspective, [מצודת דוד] suggests that this change is cognitive rather than physical. In his view, the previous inability to communicate does not refer to the people's actual voices, but rather to how they perceived the messages of the prophets. In the past, prophetic guidance sounded to their ears like the confusing, mocking babble of stutterers. Now, they will finally receive the words of the prophets as clear, bright, and easily accepted into their hearts.
