ישעיהו, פרק ל״ב, פסוק י״ב

Isaiah 32:12Sefaria

עַל־שָׁדַ֖יִם סֹפְדִ֑ים עַל־שְׂדֵי־חֶ֕מֶד עַל־גֶּ֖פֶן פֹּרִיָּֽה׃

A devastating cry of despair captures a brutal shift from lush fertility to barren starvation, blending intense physical pain with profound material and spiritual loss. The primary approach among commentators understands the imagery of beating the chest as a reflection of ancient mourning practices, where women would strike themselves in deep sadness over the unfolding tragedy [רש״י, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, another perspective suggests that the grief focuses on the physical toll of severe famine, mourning mothers whose ability to nurse has completely dried up [רד״ק, שד״ל]. In this tragic picture, the starving nation is compared to a helpless infant desperately trying to feed, only to find nothing left [מלבי״ם].

The prophet links this human suffering directly to the land using a poetic play on words, connecting the imagery of a mother's body to the devastated fields [שד״ל]. The core reason for this intense mourning is the total loss of agriculture and abundance. Once highly desired lands and fruitful vineyards have been completely ruined by the enemy and turned into barren wastelands, leaving the people without basic staples like bread and wine [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם].

Beneath this physical devastation lies a deeper layer based on early traditions, viewing the prophecy as a historical warning about the destruction of the First Temple. In this allegorical reading, the imagery takes on national and religious significance. The source of nourishment represents the sages of the Sanhedrin, who fed and sustained the Israelites with the wisdom of the Torah. The desirable fields symbolize Jerusalem and the Temple, which were the ultimate desire of God but are destined to be destroyed and plowed over like ordinary dirt. Finally, the fruitful vine represents the Israelites themselves, violently uprooted from their home [רש״י, אברבנאל].
