A deep lament arises over the destruction of the Temple, intertwining the physical loss of a magnificent structure with the spiritual brokenness that followed. The sanctuary is recognized primarily as God's house [אבן עזרא], yet it also stood as the ultimate source of pride and glory for the Israelites [מצודת דוד]. Within its walls, the ancestors offered their highest praise to God [מצודת ציון]. This devotion took various forms. It encompassed the specific, beautiful songs of the singers who served in the sanctuary [אבן עזרא], while also serving as the central foundation where previous generations learned the true fear and love of God [מלבי״ם].

Tragically, this holy space was consumed by fire. This devastation represents more than a single historical tragedy; it reflects an ongoing, painful reality. The sanctuary was burned during both the first and second destructions and has remained desolate throughout the long years of exile, as the foreign nations who ruled over it never rebuilt it [רד״ק].

In the wake of the flames, all beloved and cherished things were reduced to ruins [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Commentators differ on the exact scope of this loss. Some explain that the destruction spread beyond the sanctuary to include all the other cherished places and inheritances belonging to the Israelites [מצודת דוד].
