ירמיהו, פרק י״ב, פסוק ח׳

Jeremiah 12:8Sefaria

The close relationship between God and His people takes a tragic turn as His beloved inheritance assumes a wild and hostile nature. This inheritance refers either to the Land of Israel, which bears the guilt of those who live in it, or more precisely, to the Israelites themselves [אברבנאל].

The people are compared to a lion in the forest, representing a complete loss of restraint and a descent into wildness [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Just as a predatory lion devours flesh, the Israelites began to prey upon and destroy one another, filling the land with injustice, violence, and robbery [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. Beyond physical violence, the lion imagery carries another layer of meaning. Just as a lion's roar frightens away anyone walking through the forest, the aggressive behavior of the people effectively drove God away, causing Him to distance Himself from His own inheritance [רד״ק].

The loud voice directed at God takes on several meanings among the commentators. It is viewed as a sound of malice and rebellion, with the people speaking against God proudly and arrogantly [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל], or as the booming voices of idolaters calling out to false gods in their places of worship [רד״ק]. Conversely, the sound rising before God is understood not as the voice of the wicked, but as the desperate cry of the oppressed and the victims of this rampant violence [רש״י, רד״ק]. A third approach frames this voice as an expression of deep hypocrisy, noting how the people, despite their ongoing crimes, still dare to cry out to God and demand His help when trouble strikes [אברבנאל].

In response to all of this, God expresses a profound rejection of His inheritance. Exhausted from bearing their evil deeds, He ultimately abandons the people, leaving them completely exposed and defenseless in the hands of their enemies [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
