Jeremiah 12:16Sefaria

A vision of hope and restoration is offered to the neighboring nations, but it depends entirely on their spiritual transformation and acceptance of true faith. The primary approach among commentators is that these nations must learn to believe in God. [מלבי״ם] provides a profound historical perspective on this dynamic, explaining that the very purpose of the exile was to facilitate this change. By being banished and subdued alongside the Israelites, the gentiles were placed in a position to learn the true faith from them. This process of spiritual awakening becomes possible specifically after the downfall of these nations [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

To demonstrate this transformation, the nations are required to swear by the living God, an act that symbolizes their complete acceptance of His authority [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This represents the absolute rejection of idolatry. As [רד״ק] notes, once the Israelites returned from exile, they completely abandoned idol worship and stopped swearing by false deities like Baal. If the neighboring nations follow this renewed example, idolatry will be wiped out entirely.

A powerful historical reversal is at play in this dynamic. The Israelites did not originally invent idolatry; rather, they were influenced by their neighbors and learned these destructive practices from them. Now, the relationship flips. The nations are required to learn from the Israelites how to swear by God, just as they once taught the Israelites to swear by Baal [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

If the nations meet this spiritual condition, they are promised a secure future among God's people. The concept of being built up carries a practical meaning of rehabilitation and survival [רש״י, מצודת ציון]. These nations will achieve a stable, enduring existence alongside the Israelites [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ], ultimately reaching an equal status with them [מצודת דוד]. Historically, this vision materialized when many gentiles converted to the faith and settled permanently among the Israelites during their return from exile [רד״ק].
